I think "love triangle" became a substitute for "romance"

People just use that term to describe Tauriel's relationship with Kili, rather than the more implied tension between her, Kili AND Legolas.

Tauriel being involved romantically with Kili was definitely in the cards since the character took shape. Lilly was sent pictures of Aidan Turner's so as to know who she would be playing off of.

As for the triangle with Legolas, Lilly is clearly misremembering and conflating block 3 of principal photography with the pickup shoot. But there are antecedents of the triangle even in material shot earlier.

As shot in the middle of the second block, Tauriel and Kili's conversation on the Lakeshore is interrupted by Legolas, much as we see in the finished film. So the idea of Legolas "being in the way" way kida there already.

I've said before but as cheesy as the romance is, I do like how tragic it is. Since the story as a whole ends on a strong note of tragedy, its nice that its mirrored by this subplot; and adding Legolas as a third party whose feelings tragically go entirely unrequieted adds to this further.

Been a while since we've seen a good old greek tragedy in the multiplexes! So it was nice that the filmmakers decided to triple down on the tragedy of the whole thing.
