BUUUT.... SUPER MAJOR SPOILER, AVOID!!!!
Despite my gripes with the Dwarves vs. Smaug scene it does have quite a spectacular finish where (I won't spoil how), they make Smaug into a golden dragon. It's one of the most beautiful images of the film.
It's quite a beautiful moment. I wish the 10 minute build up to it was filled with less OTT action (poor Bilbo survives a fifty foot fall! and Thorin, as I've said, rides a wheel barrel down a river of molten gold ad swings on chains)
