His character as Halbrand/Sauron was amazing and was so rooting for him not be to Sauron...

I guess you are one of the lucky ones who didn't immediately see through the writers' cliched intent. I often figured it was closer to viewers' cognitive dissonance, but I suppose some could just go for the ride.
