While it is cliché, I think it capture's Thorin's character well...

It's said in the book that Thorin likes to go on for hours about important matters. So it seems fitting that he'd leave a huge contract for Bilbo rather than a short note. It also gives the sense of Bilbo being well out of his depth on the adventure. I'm fine with it
