is not about the dwarfs reactions, do we need to see every dwarf in every scene? NO we don't in the book we didn't know whether the dwarfs were alive or dead, drown, or what. The scene is about Bilbo rescuing the dwarfs and being unsure if he made the right decision. Not oooh lets go rafting down the river because it will be exciting. Thats part of the scene the not knowing what is happening to the dwarfs, wondering if they are all going to come out alive not seeing their expressions. Bilbo himself wondered that while they were floating down the river thinking he had possibly drown some of them. Thats what that scene is about
