When you really think of it, the only film which is poorly paced is the theatrical cut of An Unexpected Journey. The extended is paced just right for what its trying to achieve, and the other two films are paced just right, as well. The Desolation of Smaug is wonderfully kinetic. It only really ever slows down to introduce Laketown, which is of course important to do. The Battle of the Five Armies has a slow first half, but that's intentional because it communicates the stagnation of the story: the quest is fullfiled, and now laborious real politik takes the place of fast-paced adventure.
