Because if not there would have been an awful lot of green screen work

Martin Freeman is also the shortest out of the company, standing at 5'7.

In the trilogy they messed up by showing Gimli much taller than the the hobbits (green screen) and only a couple of inches taller (Rhys-Davies' actual height compared to Wood etc).
