It encapsulates much of what I would like to say, but don't have the time to. Thanks very much for writing down your assessment of this issue. 
The frustrating thing is that PJ is perfectly capable of providing the sort of thing you mention extremely well, but for whatever reason has instead gone the superficial and cringe-worthy comic-book route that is totally unsuitable for a Tolkien work…
