10th Anniversary of LOTR Filming "Day One"

I'm not sure if many of you are aware of a blog by the name of "The Noldor Blog" by Jack, a tour guide with Flat Earth Tours in Wellington, New Zealand. His blog is LOTR-related, and his posts have a nice mix of fact, rumour, and whimsy thrown in together. I've been following Jack's blog for a while now, and we've gotten friendly (he's a really nice person, very enthusiastic, and of course, geeky ). Anyway, in his latest blog post, he talks about wanting to "do something" for the 10th anniversary of the first day of filming LOTR, which commenced on 11th October 1999. Over the past few months, Jack contacted several people (PJ's spokesperson, the WETA Cave staff) and several institutions (the Wellington Council, the Embassy Cinema that in 2003 played host to ROTK's world premiere), and for a while it seemed that some things might've materialized. But now, less than a month away from the anniversary, all Jack's plans have fallen flat, as he's either got negative responses, or none at all. As it stands today, he's essentially resigned himself to marking the event by himself or with a few local Wellington LOTR fans who read his blog and contact him. So why exactly am I posting this here? Well, honestly, I empathize strongly with Jack's predicament, because when it comes to LOTR, me being half a world away (both East and West) from Hollywood and Wellywood, I've always missed out on things like this due to a lack of interest, and so I've never been able to organize anything even though I've had the inclination to. So seeing as Jack sincerely wants to do something, and looking at the efforts he put in (which many would have shared in had they been successful), I told Jack I'd put a posting here on TORn and see what the response is. Now perhaps many don't think this day is a big deal, but well, Jack really isn't asking for anything (he told me he'd appreciate my posting on TORn but hasn't asked for anything), and neither am I. At this point, I just thought I should help Jack in some way, and if posting here means some local Wellington TORnsibs would like to get together and celebrate with Jack (and any other fans who might've contacted him), well then I'll be happy I helped in some way

OF COURSE IT'S A BIG DEAL!!!!! OMG!!!! *twitch* You should let Jack that we're definitely going to mark the day here. I've actually been thinking of starting a post on this to celebrate this milestone :) The problem is... I'm going to be in NYC the weekend of the 11th (Oct 9-11), so I won't have access to a computer (if at all) until late in the day or the next day. BUT I definitely know that there will be a TORniversary Party! So lets start it right now! If anyone has an idea of how they'd like to commemorate the day... start letting your creative juices flow!! Where were you 10 years ago on October 11th? hmmmmmm? ;) Cheers, Earl!

why not do something there. We are there due to the movies, so it would be a great moment to celebrate the first day of shooting. I don't know. Maybe a festive kick-off in Central Park (literally with a game). A elventies, luncheons, half midday, hobbit-like gathering. Just of the top of my head a few suggestions (and probably not the best, but maybe some other folks around here have better ideas).

Yikes!! Well, I don't exactly remember back that far, but seeing as I was 13 at the time, I can probably say with some confidence that I was up to no good!

people like the Embassy and the council would be more likely to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the films' release. Though the first day of filming is important to us, I can see why they might not consider it so important; especially anything that would involve spending money at the current time. Regarding the bit on Jack's blog about the mountain biking - Mt Victoria is a major mountain biking spot and I suspect that event has been planned for some time. They wouldn't cancel it for what they'd imagine would be a handful of geeks. But we should definitely celebrate on the forums!

although what that might entail I have no idea!

Rosie, I think your idea is terrific. I'm one of those with an earlier flight to catch. Judging by the hotel reservations, some folk should still be around. Panel discussions end at 2 pm, but not everyone is going; maybe hours from noon to 4 pm? Too late for elevenses. Perhaps a Nieuw Amsterdam sibbie would volunteer to locate a good place in the park within walking distance of the Park Central hotel, find out if posting a banner or sign is OK, etc. ElanorTX p.s. I'm double-Dutch on my mother's side - Kuykendall and Onderdonk - the latter directly from Adrian van der Donk's brother who settled in Yonkers, NY, in 1653. The K's reached Texas by 1821 and the O's by 1851. E

it is a nice idea? I was just throwing some suggestions and not really sure if it would be a good idea. What shall I do, run into Moots and see if people are interested in joining in? And won't it be too cold for a picnic, and what if it rains? Oh my, doubting.... . And what fun to read you have some Dutch in you. Yes, the Dutch are almost everywhere. Last week the Empire State Building was orange because of the festivities this year (400 years the Dutch landed in New Amsterdam) and the Prince and Princess visited New York. Maybe they'll turn it orange again for me . That of course would be a good motivation to party in the Park.

... I'm going through a phase of "creative mindblock" these days, but I'll sure think up something by the 11th, which incidentally, is also the day of my final exam in Spanish at the current level I'm studying And yes, I did realize that a bunch of you sibs would be away from home (and possibly away from the boards as well) on that weekend, and we'll surely miss you all on here, but hey, at least you all will be celebrating together in RL (and in style at that)!

Hi, Jack here from the NZ Noldor blog - I'm glad somebody is reading my blog, btw... :) (Thanks Earl!) Not a great deal has happened since Earl started this thread - at least nothing more has happened here in Wellington. Apparently there's now a party starting in New York City, of all places... Good on you guys, I wish I could make it... I'm really pleased that there's at least someone else out there who thinks the 10th anniversary of Day One should be celebrated. I just wish we could have had it here, where the actual event took place. I guess there's about three weeks to go before I get really drunk on hobbit beer, all by lonely myself... if there's any local fans here that want to join me, please leave me a message here or on my blog...? - Jack
